The Hook

Evil kings would used trolls altered with snake venom for war. Time forgot some of the trolls in their snake pits. They fed on the snakes and the snakes on them. Until the tortured beings were found.

Inspiration to Draw on

The Troll is a wonderfully nasty surprise for any adventuring party. And the bast part is they come in all sorts of flavors that can help fill your DM brain with fun questions. For instance, “How would a troll be exposed to venom and poisons for so long that it start becoming part of them?“

The trolls ability to regenerate and never die is not just some weird form of magical evolution but also begs the question of “WHAT THE HECK KEEPS EATING THESE THINGS THAT THEY NEEDED TO EVOLVE LIKE THIS!“

Answering these questions can lead to fantastic and fun adventuring ideas. For the venom why should we think that a clearly apex predator should need to develop this out being hunted, maybe they developed it because of abuse.

Trolls are stupid brutes that could easily be pointed in a direction and let loose on ones enemies. They make for fantastic devices of war and I think this it would not be an unrealistic thing for an evil person to start asking “How do we make these things worse?”

Now I guess the question is “Where can you put these beauties in your game?”
